The holidays are a time when we count our blessings and share all that we have with our loved ones, but for the parents in some of our most desperate neighborhoods, where a staggering 80% of children live below the poverty level, the holidays are a further reminder of the challenges they face every day. For these parents, daily thoughts are much more basic, and are no different during the holidays than the rest of the year:
· Will my child be safe after school today?
· Will my child eat well today?
· Will my child keep up in school?
At the Boys & Girls Club of Philadelphia, we meet these challenges head on, every day. Last year, we provided opportunity and hope to the parents of almost 8,700 children across Philadelphia, not just in the form of a safe haven, but with structured programs including our Call to Literacy Initiative, STEM Learning Labs, and Kids Cafes. Our goal is to meet the every day emotional, physical and social needs of our families, and our services provide our city’s youth with the confidence and skills they need for a successful future.
As one 14-year-old club kid wrote earlier this year,
“The Boys & Girls Clubs made me feel comfortable in my own skin.”
Whether you are a parent or caring member of our community, what could be a better expression of all the holidays symbolize than providing a child with self-confidence? Won’t you consider the plight of the other parents among us, and help us make a BOLD Change for youth of Philadelphia?
This holiday season, please join us in going BOLD for Philadelphia’s children!
